World War III rages and a Soviet-led army has launched a surprise attack on the U.S.A. ![]() If you haven’t played World in Conflict before but are a fan of military RTS games, even those without base-building, then World in Conflict is one not to be missed. However, with the Soviet Assault expansion pack that comes coupled with the Complete Edition, playing as the Russians becomes an option. While the multiplayer aspect lets you choose between three factions: the Soviet Union, US and NATO, the single-player campaign from the base game has you control the US and NATO forces, tasked with defending their land from the Soviet Union. In this fictional story you do however battle in locations based on ones in real-life, ones seen in Europe, the USSR and in America. The narrative is all about what would happen if World War III came out of the Cold War. The element of base-building is not present here at all, instead placing emphasis on the units you deploy using the points that you have. This 2007 game is all about tactics and careful management of the units you have. World in Conflict might be an old RTS title, but it’s a very good one. Whichever setting these games are set in, their strategic gameplay is most likely to keep you hooked. Whether you’re managing a huge army or a handful of diverse units, tactically engaging your enemy is vital to victory. If you're a new to the game, then the Complete Edition is without question worth checking out, offering a distinct brand of real-time tactical gameplay that forgoes base building and complex resource collection in favor of immediate action and an accessible, streamlined system of reinforcement and explosive special attacks. If you're really into the fiction of the game or crave anything World in Conflict, then the missions won't disappoint, but if you feel you've already had your fill with the storyline, you're not missing out on that much if you pass on Soviet Assault. ![]() They're distributed throughout the original campaign instead of presented in a continuous string, meaning if you're starting a new campaign for the second time you'll have to play through a majority of the original content to see what's added here. The six new missions are well-constructed, add an interesting dimension to the story by building sympathy with the Soviets, and offer more characters fleshed out with strong voice acting and in-engine cutscenes. The appeal of Soviet Assault is sure to vary quite a bit depending on your level of exposure to World in Conflict. I won't spoil how it goes, and perhaps some of the turns it takes are a bit predictable, but they remain compelling nonetheless, and the high-quality of the writing featured in the main game is present in these bits as well. However, there is also a high-ranking officer whom not only believes that victory is possible, but he truly believes in the morality of the invasion with all his heart. This is actually, in many ways, even more compelling, as it features reluctant officers at the very top, in charge, knowing that they are invading a country that hates them (despite excellent Propoganda-based bits shown involving the US civilians reportedly coming out in droves to greet their 'Socialist Liberators'). Primarily, you can read my World in Conflict review, and add a smaller, parallel Campaign, interwoven with the existing one, showing the Soviet's side of the invasion. I say this because in terms of overall package quality, the Soviet Assault version is much, much better. 11h 47m Played If the choice comes between the original and this, get this – What upset people, at the time of release, is that Soviet Assault isn't a traditional expansion, but rather it's a full re-build of the original game, and the only way to access it is to play through the entire game again, this time with half a dozen other missions added.
